We aim to make every visit as comfortable as possible. Most patients find that a periodontal exam involves little to no discomfort, and we offer dental anxiety management options for anyone who feels nervous about treatment.
Are X-rays necessary?
Yes, current periodontal X-rays help us identify issues that aren’t visible during a visual exam. If your dentist has recently taken X-rays, you can ask them to send those over to our office instead of retaking them.
What is the cost of treatment?
Because every patient’s needs are different, a full periodontal examination is necessary to determine the right treatment plan and associated cost. Fees vary based on the severity of the issue and complexity of care, and an estimate is usually provided at your initial consultation. In some cases, additional diagnostics or preliminary treatment may be needed before we can finalize a plan. We take a conservative approach throughout, aiming for the least invasive path to a healthy result.
Will my insurance cover the cost?
Many dental insurance plans include coverage for periodontal care. Bring your insurance information to your appointment, and if needed, we can submit a pre-treatment claim to help estimate your benefits, though this isn’t required by most plans. Will I need surgery?
Not necessarily. When gum disease is caught early, it can often be treated effectively without surgery. Our recommendations are always tailored to your specific case, and we prioritize conservative, non-surgical treatment whenever it can achieve your goals.
Can my teeth be saved?
Advances in periodontal care have made it possible to save most teeth, even in fairly advanced cases. Dr. Zakaria will always explore options to preserve your natural teeth before considering extraction and replacement.
When will I return to my general dentist?
We work closely with your general dentist throughout your treatment. If additional restorative work is needed, such as crowns or fillings, your general dentist typically handles that portion of care, and we coordinate to keep everyone on the same page. Ongoing check-ups with your general dentist remain important for long-term periodontal maintenance.
What happens if I delay treatment?
Periodontal disease is progressive and generally worsens over time without treatment. Delaying care can lead to additional bone loss, higher treatment costs down the road, and in some cases, tooth loss. While dental implants or dentures can replace lost teeth, preserving your natural teeth is almost always the better outcome.
