Education and Training

Dr. Zakaria earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Dentistry, then completed his Certificate of Periodontics and a Master of Dental Science degree at Indiana University School of Dentistry. That combination of general dental training and advanced periodontal specialization is what allows him to plan and perform both periodontal treatment and dental implant surgery under one roof.

A Pioneer in Minimally Invasive Gum Grafting

Dr. Zakaria developed and has performed the Flapless Connective Tissue Graft technique for gum recession for close to two decades. Unlike traditional grafting, this minimally invasive gum grafting approach uses microsurgery principles to reduce pain, swelling, and recovery time while producing highly predictable, natural-looking results.

Dr. Zakaria lectures and provides Continuing Education training courses in Periodontics and Dental implants for hygienists, dentists, and specialists. He has lectured extensively locally, nationally, and internationally for the last 29 years. Dr. Zakaria has invented, developed, and performed the Flapless Connective Tissue Graft (Minimally Invasive) for the last 17 years with a great rate of success and wonderful results. He employs Microsurgery Principles and Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques resulting in less pain, and swelling, and a higher success rate.

Dr. Zakaria has completed numerous post-graduate courses in Periodontics and is well-versed in the latest treatments and techniques in the management of Periodontal Disease and Dental Implants. He is one of the very few periodontists in the greater Detroit area, as well as in the State of Michigan, to have earned the title of Diplomate in addition to his State Board Certifications. Dr. Zakaria received his Certificate of Periodontics and Master of Science Degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Dentistry. Dr. Zakaria has been involved in Dental Implants and Periodontal Plastic Surgery since 1992. He taught at Indiana University School of Dentistry from 1992-1996 and held a teaching position at the University of Detroit School of Dentistry from 1997-2020, Dr. Zakaria is currently teaching at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics and Oral medicine.
