Signs of Gum Disease in Northville, MI
Periodontal treatment can be initiated in various ways. During routine checkups or other dental visits, your general dentist or hygienist may detect early signs of gum disease and recommend a visit to a periodontist. However, you don’t need a referral to see a periodontist – you can schedule a consultation directly at our office.
Request an AppointmentIf you notice any of the following symptoms, we strongly recommend booking an appointment with us as soon as possible:
- Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed while brushing or eating regular foods, it could be a sign of a gum infection.
- Persistent bad breath: Chronic halitosis that doesn’t improve with brushing may indicate periodontitis, gingivitis, or an early-stage gum infection.
- Loose teeth or gum recession: Teeth that feel loose or appear longer could signal gum recession and bone loss due to gum disease.
- Health conditions related to gum disease: People with heart disease, diabetes, or conditions like osteopenia or osteoporosis often experience linked periodontal infections. These infections can spread through the bloodstream, affecting other areas of the body.
The mucosa, or lining of your mouth, is normally smooth and coral pink. Changes to its appearance could indicate an underlying health issue, such as oral cancer. Common signs of abnormal changes include:
- Red or white patches inside the mouth (erythroplasia or leukoplakia)
- Sores that don’t heal and bleed easily
- Lumps or thickening in the mouth’s lining
- Persistent sore throat or hoarseness
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
These symptoms can appear on the lips, cheeks, roof of the mouth, gums, tongue, face, and neck. Pain is not always associated with oral cancer, but any unexplained facial or oral pain should not be ignored. We recommend performing a monthly self-examination to check for signs of oral cancer.
